This hat, by Elizabeth McGuire at Make Do Vintage, reflects her love of 20th-century architecture and abstract art.
It takes me back to my photography trips to New York and Berlin, with views of geometric concrete tower blocks against different colour skies.

Above The City is a striking geometric two-coloured mosaic 'slouchy' style hat where only one colour is used in each round. It is an enjoyable knit, suitable for ambitious novices who can knit, purl, increase and decrease working in the round on circular needles. For more experienced knitters, this is a quick, relaxing project and stash buster to gift or treat yourself.
Yarn Requirements:
- Main colour: Approximately 135m/148yds of DK yarn.
- Contrast colour: Approximately 90m/98.5yds of DK yarn.
Notions:
- 3.5mm and 4mm circular needles, 40cm long.
- 3mm double-pointed needles, magic loop or small circulars will be needed for the decreasing section of the hat.
- 9 stitch markers to mark the 16-stitch repeat pattern, including 1 distinct stitch marker at the end of the round.
- Yarn needle to weave in the ends.

For the rib section only which can be stretchy so if you are in between sizes it is recommended choosing the size below.

When laid flat the head measure 8" or just over 20cm from top to bottom.
Tension/Gauge:
Gauge is worked in the round on 4mm needles.
- Stockinette stitch: 21 stitches x 24 rounds = 10cm/4" square.
- Mosaic colourwork pattern:
- Width: 16 stitches = 6.5cm/2.5"
- Height: 32 rounds = 8.5cm/3.25"
