The Orme Sweater/Siwmper y Gogarth is a wide-necked customisable simple sweater, knitted top down in the round.

The Great Orme/Y Gogarth is designed to be slightly oversized with approximately 4 inches/10cm of positive ease.

The Little Orme/Rhiwledyn is designed to be close to actual body measurements and, although not shaped, should fit to body shape more with approximately 2 inches/5cm of positive ease.

Both sweaters can be made with a choice of two body lengths and any of three different sleeve styles – short, ¾-length and long. You can also create a body length of your very own just by continuing to knit until the length of the sweater is as you desire – why not have a Little Orme dress? For a very oversized sweater with even more positive ease, I would suggest you make a sweater 1 or 2 sizes larger than you would normally make in Great Orme, or 2 to 3 sizes larger in Little Orme.

The Orme Sweater/Siwmper y Gogarth is named after The Great Orme in Llandudno, with the cable cars and trams heading up its sides echoed in the cable raglan design of the sweater. Orme means ‘Sea Monster’ in Old Norse, which also seemed fitting with the colour of my original design (Cat and Sparrow’s Lone Ranger DK in the colourway Thetis). The Little Orme/Rhiwledyn is a smaller promontory on the way out of Llandudno to the East, towards Rhos on Sea.

Needles and Accessories

  • 3.75mm circular needles (16”/40cm or 24”/60cm long) for neck and border. Smaller sizes may require the 40cm to avoid stretching.
  • Optional – 3.75mm double-pointed needles for the cuffs for long tapered and short sleeve variations. (Or your preferred method for small circumference knitting.)
  • 4.5mm circular needles (32”/80cm long) for body.
  • Optional – 4.5mm circular needles (12”/30cm for the ¾ or long tapered sleeve variations). (Or your preferred method for small circumference knitting. It is possible to magic loop the 32”/80cm needle if required.)
  • 5 stitch markers, spare yarn or stitch holders.
  • Cable needle

Pattern Notes

This sweater is knitted top-down, with a combination of both yoke and raglan shaping and cables radiating out from the neckline and down the front sides of the sweater. The cable sections are simple and charted as well as written. Stitch counts are shown in italic at the end of rows. Directions for the different sizes will be shown as follows: 1 (2, 3, 4, 5) (6, 7, 8, 9).

Some sections will be split into sizes rather than worked alongside each other for ease of use.

Some testers have created striped versions. We found that this worked best when alternating colours every 6 rows, which will require splitting the yarn requirements equally between the two colours.

Tension

Please note that it is the tension only that will determine which version of the Orme Sweater / Siwmper y Gogarth you create. Apart from the difference in tension, the pattern is identical for both options.

Please check your tension and WPI carefully before starting your project.
